กิจกรรมผู้บำเพ็ญประโยชน์

                กิจกรรมผู้บำเพ็ญประโยชน์  (Girl Guides หรือ Girl Scouts)  คือกิจกรรมอาสาสมัครสำหรับเด็กผู้หญิงและสตรีที่สนใจ โดยไม่จำกัดเชื้อชาติ วรรณะ และศาสนา  มีเป้าหมายเพื่อฝึกเด็กผู้หญิงและเยาวสตรีเป็นพลเมืองดีมีประโยชน์ต่อสังคม ตามหลักการที่ Lord Baden Powellผู้ก่อตั้งกิจการลูกเสือและผู้บำเพ็ญประโยชน์ได้กำหนดไว้

             คำว่า “ผู้บำเพ็ญประโยชน์” หมายความว่า “ผู้ที่ฝึกฝนตนเองให้พร้อมที่จะนำและช่วยเหลือผู้อื่นเสมอ” มาจากภาษาอังกฤษว่า“ GUIDE ” แปลว่า “ ผู้นำทาง ”  หมายถึง  ผู้ที่ฝึกตนเองให้พร้อมที่จะช่วยเหลือคนเดินทาง โดยการฝึกทักษะต่างๆ ทั้งร่างกาย สติปัญญา  อารมณ์  และสังคม

              Lord Baden Powell เห็นว่าลักษณะการฝึกฝนตนเองนี้   เหมาะสมสำหรับเด็กผู้หญิงจึงให้เรียกกิจกรรมนี้ว่า “Girl Guides” และให้ผู้หญิงดำเนินการโดยแยกออกจากกิจกรรมสำหรับเด็กผู้ชายที่เรียกว่า “Boy Scouts” (คำว่า SCOUT หมายถึง ผู้ที่ชอบผจญภัย ผู้สืบเหตุการณ์ ซึ่งเหมาะสมกับเด็กผู้ชายมากกว่า) ต่อมาเมื่อสหรัฐอเมริกานำกิจกรรมนี้ไปเผยแพร่เรียก Girl Guides ว่า Girl Scouts   ปัจจุบันจึงมีบางประเทศ (ประมาณ 10% ของสมาชิกทั้งหมด)  เรียกตนเองว่า Girl Scouts

           องค์การผู้บำเพ็ญประโยชน์โลก ( WAGGGS – The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) WAGGGS ได้กำหนดคุณสมบัติขององค์กรสมาชิกเพื่อความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันไว้  คือ (1) เป็นองค์กรอิสระ ไม่ขึ้นหรือเป็นส่วนหนึ่งขององค์การอื่นๆ (2) สมาชิกต้องเป็นโดยสมัครใจยึดมั่นในหลักการพื้นฐานที่ผู้ก่อตั้งได้กำหนดไว้ (3) เป็นเอกภาพแต่ละประเทศมีองค์กรเดียว และเป็นองค์กรระดับชาติ เรียกชื่อว่า Girl Guides  หรือ Girl Scouts

Girl Guides or Girl Scouts is a volunteer activity for girls and women who are interested, regardless of race, nationality, religion, and culture. Its goal is to train girls and women to become responsible and valuable citizens for society, according to the principles set by Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the Scouts movement. The term “Guide” means “a person who leads the way” and refers to someone trained to be ready to help others in need by developing physical, intellectual, emotional, and social skills.

Lord Baden Powell believed this type of self-development training was suitable for girls, so he established the Girl Guides movement and separated it from the Boy Scouts activity, which was more suitable for boys. Later, when the United States adopted this movement, they named it the Girl Scouts. Currently, some countries (about 10% of all members) refer to themselves as Girl Scouts.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) has set membership criteria for member organizations to maintain unity, namely: (1) being an independent organization, not being part of other organizations; (2) members must voluntarily adhere to the basic principles established by the founder; and (3) being a national-level organization with a unique identity in each country, named according to local preferences.
